Webinar: The Impact of Tube Length and Other Variables on Delivery of Supplemental Oxygen

Gillian Gulley, SPT, Kathryn Rutledge, SPT, Emma von der Linden, SPT, Jennifer Marie Ryan, PT, DPT, MS
from Northwestern University Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences

This discussion will address the research findings that delineate the multiple variables that can impact the effectiveness of supplemental oxygen delivery. Through case example, the presenters will address clinical reasoning to implement while managing patients on supplemental oxygen to maximize their therapy participation. We will address the mechanical and physiological details to weigh while addressing progressive activity challenges in patients with obstructive and restrictive pulmonary disorders. Obstructive disorders variables will be addressed in the context of COPD and restrictive disorders will be addressed in the context of pneumonia and in the case of a patient post abdominal surgery who has secondary restrictions on their pulmonary system due to pain and musculoskeletal dysfunction.

Course Details
  • When: Monday, March 9th, 2026, 8:00pm-9:00pm EST
  • Cost: Free for Home Health members; $25 for non-members
  • CEUs: 1 hour of continuing education

By the end of this course participants will be able to…
  • Describe safe permutations of oxygen delivery aspects.
  • Understand the mechanics of supplemental oxygen devices.
  • Apply the relationship between breathing pattern and alveolar ventilation.
  • Demonstrate how to optimize the use of supplemental oxygen with various disease states.
  • By the end of the session, learners should be able to integrate the salient points of supplemental oxygen management in Home Health Care Settings for patients with hypoxemia following a restrictive pulmonary diagnosis.
