“Home on the Range: Physical Therapy in the Changing Home Health World”

Course Description
This program is designed to enhance the listener’s awareness of the evolving nature of home health physical therapy in a contemporary world. Specific program content includes: 1) a summary of the challenges faced by therapists when working with increasingly older, more medically complex patients; 2) an overview of national guidelines having direct impact on the provision of safe exercise; 3) a discussion of real-time telerehabilitation and its emerging influencing on physical therapy in the home; 4) a presentation of new issues having potential litigation implications for home health agencies and therapists; and 5) a discussion of suggested changes in physical therapy curricula.
Course Objectives
At the conclusion of this audio conference, participants should be able to:
- Identify contemporary factors influencing the delivery of physical therapy in home health settings;
- Recognize the importance of learning and attending to exercise guidelines provided by other professional organizations;
- Provide a sound rationale for improving monitoring capabilities during physical therapy in the home;
- Differentiate between the terms “telemedicine,” “telehealth,” and “telerehabilitation;”
- Articulate why physical therapy curriculum changes are necessary to keep pace with new technology;
- Understand why home health agencies must re-tool to better meet the needs of both older and sicker patients
Presenter
Donald K. Shaw, PT, PhD, FAACVPR is President of Telerehabilitation Concepts® Incorporated. Prior to his present position, Dr. Shaw was an Associate Professor of Physical Therapy at Texas State University where he was Director of the Telehealth Program. In 1997 he joined the physical therapy faculty at East Carolina University serving as an Associate Professor in the Physical Therapy Department until 2002. He has also served as Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee and as Adjunct Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Shaw received his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Physical Education from George Williams College in Chicago, Illinois; his doctorate in Exercise Physiology from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. He received his Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy degree from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.
Dr. Shaw is a Fellow and former national board member of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. He has lectured and presented research in Argentina, Scotland, Ireland, the Peoples Republic of China, and throughout the United States. His published work appears widely in medical journals including the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, Respiratory Care, Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy Journal, Heart and Lung, Journal of Allied Health, and the American Journal of Cardiology.
