Advanced Competency in OASIS-E Certificate

OASIS-E, Value Based Purchasing, PDGM and STAR metrics have all contributed to the remarkable transformation of the Home Health Care industry.  The time for OASIS precision has never been more critical. Effective Home Health Care Agencies must integrate a multidisciplinary approach aimed at achieving measurable, meaningful characteristics and abilities useful to the patient-all within an efficient and effective delivery system. Understanding and applying the data provided by a comprehensive and accurate OASIS assessment can be your agency’s key to success in achieving this objective.

The Academy’s OASIS-E competency series is designed to be the Physical Therapist’s roadmap - not only in navigating the updates to the OASIS-E assessment, but illuminating the need for a thoughtful analysis of OASIS data applicability.  The tools to achieve OASIS accuracy and the optimal patient experience will be provided. Case study scenarios will challenge the participant to synthesize multiple clinical factors in making best practice decisions. Upon successful completion of the OASIS-E competency series, the participant with have a greater understanding of, and proficiency in, achieving comprehensive OASIS-E accuracy.  Come and explore what the experts of the industry have to say regrading OASIS-E, the role of Physical Therapy as OASIS data collectors and the integral role you play.

About the Program

This certificate program is currently offered as a bundle. This bundle includes the FIVE (5) online course modules (12.0 hours total) and the exam required for the certificate. The course modules include the following:

  • Module One - OASIS-E Bridge Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 (3 Hours) - This module presents an overview of the origins of OASIS, its evolution and significance for the home health Physical Therapist while investigating the newer additions to the OASIS document: sections A,B,C,D,J,K,N and O. Within these sections, the Physical Therapist will uncover the expanding definition of holistic care and the role rehab plays in promoting post-acute success.  The critical connection between unsafe patient practices, OASIS coding and therapeutic interventions will be examined.

  •  Module Two - OASIS-E 101 Pt. 1. and Pt. 2 (3 Hours) - This module provides a deep dive into the conventions of OASIS data collection while delving into the Conditions of Participation’s goal of creating patient centered, data-driven, outcome-oriented care. Risk adjustment methodology and its impact within the OASIS assessment will be discussed while a comprehensive analysis of the assessment logic within the integumentary and GG sections will prepare the Physical Therapist for consistent OASIS accuracy. A case study scenario will challenge the Physical Therapist to integrate fall risk and OASIS analysis within a tailored care plan.

  • Module Three - OASIS-E and VBP (2 Hours) - This module examines composite scoring, magnitude of change and the necessity of OASIS precision within the Home Health Value-Based Purchasing model. The history, design and objectives of the Valued-Based Purchasing model are explored.  The anatomy of the Total Performance Score is examined with a focus on formulating evidence-based strategies to optimize the patient experience while mitigating unwanted claims-based influences upon the Total Performance score.

  • Module Four - OASIS-E and PDGM (2 Hours) - This module delves into Functional Impairment Scoring methodology and provides strategies to mitigate hospitalization risk. The three transformational elements of the Patient Driven Groupings Model are unpacked with an all-inclusive study of the eight (8) OASIS items driving the patient’s functional impairment classification. Contrasting OASIS accuracy vs. common coding misconceptions will illuminate the opportunities to better reflect the patient’s true characteristics within the OASIS assessment.

  • Module Five - OASIS-E and STAR (2 Hours) - This module investigates the source of your Agencies’ STAR power and explores assessment strategies to improve OASIS coding within both outcome and process metrics. This module will journey through the improvement standards of the seven (7) Golden STARS that drive your quality rating. Upon completion of this this module, the Physical Therapist will be able to correctly differentiate patient “ability vs. performance” distinctions necessary for OASIS accuracy while harmonizing the unique environmental and cognitive influences on OASIS coding-all within an evidenced-based mindset.

Certification Exam: Upon successful completion of the 100 question post series exam, the Physical Therapist will be granted the APTA Home Health Academy’s Advanced Competency Certificate in OASIS-E. You will have 2 attempts to achieve a passing score of 70% on the exam.
